Humble Beginnings
John Fogerty was born on the 28th of May 1945 in Berkeley, California. Born into a family of five brothers, John had an eventful and highly disciplined childhood. His schooling was very strict and discipline-oriented, as he attended a Catholic school.
John’s childhood was mired in parental problems as well. In his memoir, Fortunate Son, John said that his parents were alcoholics, and they divorced when he was just in third grade.
Not happy with the catholic school, John Fogerty soon transferred to El Cerrito High School. This change had a big impact on his life as he met his future bandmates in this school.
Soon after starting in the school, John founded a cover band along with bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford. The band was named Blue Velvet, and they generally performed covers of Bo Diddley and Little Richard. In the following years, John’s brother Tom also joined the band.
Once the band got a little recognition, they signed a deal with Fantasy Records, which changed their name to The Golliwogs. Interestingly, the name was changed without even notifying the members. Regardless, they released 7 singles which, unfortunately, did not do too well.
Military Service
Like many during the time, John was also drafted for the Vietnam War in 1966. John then enlisted in the army and went through proper training at Fort Bragg, Fort Knox, and Fort Lee. John served active duty for just over a year, but he remained as a reserve until 1968.
Exploding the Music Scene
Once done with the military service, John and the bad resumed making music. They, however, changed their name to Creedence Clearwater Revival ( CCR ). The band released its debut album the following year.
A single, Susie Q, was also released, and with that release, the band became famous.
As the band became famous and started to boost John Forgerty’s net worth, Rifts among the band members started to appear. John was insistent that as he wrote, sang, and played the lead guitar, he should have a higher share in the earnings.
This argument made things hard for Tom, and he subsequently left the band.
To make things better among the remaining three members, John insisted on n equal effort in the creation of music for an equal share of earnings. The band then released what would be their final album, Mardi Gras.
Other singles, such as Sweet Hitch-hiker and Someday Never Comes, were also released.
All in all, the band was a major success as they had many songs, such as Fortunate Son and Proud County, among the main hits. Unfortunately, the rifts were too big in the band, and eventually, John Fogerty went the solo way.
